For a glimpse of the glory that you are about to see then none can be better
W.A. Poucher's The Highlands; W.A. Poucher's Scotland and W.A. Poucher's
Skye all published by Constable.
For those who are particularly interested in the western Isles then Johnson
& Boswell - a journey to the western Isles - A Tour of the Hebrides - is
a must. It is a delightful story of some 200 years ago and how people
then viewed these magical islands
There is a plethora of books for those who wish to walk. One that is particularly
good is in the Pathfinder Guide Series - Skye and the North West Highlands
- Published by Jerrold and the Ordnance Survey. An excellent book.
For sheer pleasure Murial Gray's First Fifty is a gem.
There is a particularly interesting small book giving information for the whole of
the Wester Ross District and it was written by Mrs. Constance Nitford -
originally in the 1930's. It was reprinted some years ago and is on sale locally
in the area and is published by the Northern Times Limited in Golspie.
Portrait of the Highlands by W Douglas Simpson published by Hale, is a superb
introduction to the central and the Northern Highlands of Scotland. Copiously
illustrated, it is an excellent book for both the casual and the serious student of
the area. It was originally published in 1969 but nevertheless has stood the test
of time extraordinarily well. The author also wrote Portrait of Skye
and the outer Hebrides which is also a brilliant book. It doesn't aim to
be another tourist handbook but it certainly does give a portrait of the areas
both in their geology, their culture and their history. Very very good reading.
A delightful book, Scottish Mountain Drawings was produced by dear Mr. Wainwright
who has written such wonderful books and delighted us with so many drawings of the
Lake District. This was published in 1974 and is an absolute must for those who wish
to walk some Munros. This volume deals with the northern Highlands and is published
by Westmoreland. The trilogy of books written by Tom Atkinson are a very good way
of learning a little about a lot of places. The guide book to the north of Scotland from Ullapool to
Cape Wrath and from Bonar Bridge to Bettyhill is called The Empty Lands The
guide book to the far west and far north up to Ullapool from Monar and Knoydart is
called The road to the Isles There is so much contained in these books and they
can be heartily recommended.
