Looking forward to 2013 to celebrate our Scottish wildlife. We’ve just received an update of the sea life seen from the Summer Queen sailing from Ullapool last year:
32 Atlantic white-sided dolphins
735 Common dolphins
615 Harbour porpoises
26 Minke whales
8 Killer whales (Orca) including the baby “Summer”
In addition to these we had a pod of common dolphin about 170 strong right up to the head of the locj last autumn.
From the sea to the air, some local sightings are worth a mention:
Also on the Rivington bird feeder we’ve had woodpeckers, and at the head of the loch kingfishers.
Growing in reputation as one of the best gatherings of players, composers and all things guitar the festival is on over the weekend of 3/4/5 October 2014.
Weekend of 20/21st of September 2014 sees this year’s Loopallu festival ‘the best little fest in the west’. Come and round off the festival season with one of the most idyllic festival sites ever – as long as the weather holds…..
Another succesful and popular trial in 2013 and we’re looking forward to the first Saturday in August in 2014 for the next event. Come along and watch some of the top trial dogs (and their handlers) show off their skills.
Disney have premiered “Brave”, their animated story set in the Highlands of Scotland. If you want to see the stunning scenery in real life, then come and stay with us and have a base for exploring the highlands and all they offer: mountains, glens, forests, moorland, lochs, stunning beaches, castles and not least the welcomig friendly highlanders themselves.
Our swimming pool is open again! If you want a wet weather attraction for all the family then the pool, gym and sauna are ideal.
After about a year of building work to replace the leisure centre roof, the 25 metre Ullapool swimming pool has now re-opened, resplendent with new changing rooms and solar panels on the roof. Future plans are to share a small scale district biomass heating system with the village hall and An Talla Solais arts centre.
I went on a fantastic bread making course on Monday at Ullapool Bakery. We made focacia, spelt, wholemeal, plain white loaves, fruit bread and soda bread, as well as learning about sourdough. The bakery is in the village and Alan the baker has over forty years experience of ‘proper’ baking. All their bread is made without additives by hand.
Come to a traditional highland ceilidh in the Ullapool village hall. Doors open about 9:00 p.m. till the day after. Be prepared for energetic dancing, chatting laughter and more….
